TSL 014 Academic Reading
One of the subject that we need to learn for the first semester is Academic Reading. Learning this subject with Sir Afiq was really exciting, and fun! Having him as our lecturer is great, as he is very happy and always entertain us in every class.
For this subject, we have a few assignments and assessments we need to do throughout the semester. Every week, two people will have their time to share something with the whole class about what they read.
Notes and Lectures
For Reading subject, we will have lectures on Tuesday and Thursday every week. In Reading classes, we learned a lot of things, for instance, Discourse Markers, Contextual Clues and Determining Topic.
We also did some exercises on Reading and discussed them together, especially before the Midterm and the Final Examination.
In Reading classes, we also watched two movies, which were Hamilton and Laskar Pelangi in class and after that, we need to conclude what did we got from those movies.
Reading classes with Sir Afiq, for me it was a meaningful experience as he is not only good at teaching us, but he is also an actor and really talented, I hope I will get to see him for the 2nd Semester to teach us something and create more memories with him :)
Assignments and Assessments
For this subject, there are a few assignments and assignments which need to be done. The first and the second assignment that we need to do are Reading Journal 1 and Reading Journal 2.
For these assignments, we were given an article each and we need to write a reflection on what we understand from that article.
For Journal 1, I wrote about The Impact of COVID-19 to Education Sector in Malaysia, and I got 7 out of 10 marks for this journal. Four Journal 2, I wrote about The Pros and Cons of Individualism and the marks is still unknown.
The third assessment that we need to do is the Midterm Assessment. For this assessment, we need to sit for an examination and the questions asked are about what we learn in the first part of the semester, like Contextual Clues, Discourse Markers and many more.
We did this test on the 7th of September, which was on my birthday. For this assessment, I got an average of marks over 20.
The fourth assessment that we need to do is the Group Presentation. For this assessment, I worked together with Adib, Khadijah, Anis and Nabihah. What we need to do for this assignment is we need to find articles and present what we got from the articles. Our group choose to present about world hunger. We explained about the definition, causes, statistics and ways to reduce world hunger. By presenting this topic, we got to learn about world hunger and makes us realised that there are a lot of things we should do to reduce it.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, there are a lot of new things that I've learnt by studying this subject. The classes were great, although they were conducted online. For the Final Examination, I hope that I can face it calmly and readily and achieved great results. The only thing that I can say to my Reading lecturer is thank you for teaching us. Your sharing, memories and more will kept securely in my heart. Thank you so much Sir, hope to see you next semester!
